Wildheart of the Month | Mike

It’s time for a brand new Wildheart of the Month (WOM)! Every month we interview one of our Wildhearts. We ask them about their Crossfit journey, their day job, their favorite movements and about some of her goofy stuff. This month our WOM is Mike Nijman (38), self employed cabinet maker and family man, a Wildheart since 2 years!

To be fit or not to be fit

‘A few years ago, it came up to my mind that maybe it would be a good time to become fit, which I wasn’t. The reason for that thought was because I signed up for a quarter triathlon, which basically forced me to look at my current fitness level. So I got myself a bike, bicycle outfit and a helmet and started biking. I also got some help from a personal trainer, who ‘killed’ me every session but got me fitter than I was. It became quite expensive and the sessions became I little boring after a while, because we were doing the same things over and over again. So I searched for a way to become fit, but also something that would keep me interested and that’s how I found CrossFit‘.

‘Doing CrossFit has changed me in a positive way and contributed to my quality of life’.

Fun fact(or)

‘CrossFit is this only sport that has really kept my interest and that’s because it’s so much fun! Yes… it does ‘kill’ me sometimes, but I love that fact that the workouts are never the same and always challenging. There are so many different movements and you’ll need proper skills to do them which make the seem out of your reach but in a sense also doable, because there is always a scaling option that you can choose from. With CrossFit I keep learning every day and get better after every workout.

Workout in the morning, before your brain figures out what you’re doing

‘I’m a real morning trooper and love to start my week with an early Monday morning workout. It’s just the best way to start my day and with two kids it’s just easier to fit in. If I would do a workout in the evening I might perform better, but then I would be so hyped that I won’t be able to get my sleep’.

If it feels good, it is good

‘One of my favorite movements is the snatch. It’s just one of those movements when you perform the movement and it feels good, it is good and it feels so much easier to execute. It’s also because I feel that I got the hang of it that I really like it ;). The one movement that never feels good is running… I dread running but I know it’s part of CrossFit. Maybe that’s also part of the reason why I deliberately workout in the morning, so I can’t sign out for class when I see running on the program ;)’.

Favorite Wildheart memory

‘One of my favorite memories was last year during the summer after the morning class, sitting on the outdoor table catching my breath with the sun on my face. That was a really happy moment. Another favorite memory was during my first CrossFit Open, when I just started doing CrossFit for three months. It was great participating because it didn’t matter if you just started CrossFit or have been doing CrossFit for years, everyone got challenged and cheered for’.

Stay tuned for our next Wildheart of the Month!
