Wildheart of the Month | Dennis

It’s time for a brand new Wildheart of the Month (WOM)! Every month we interview one of our Wildhearts. We ask them about their Crossfit journey, their day job, their favourite movements and about some other goofy stuff. This month our WOM is Dennis (38), a member since November 2016. He will be leaving us in November this year to start a whole new adventure…

Breaking down the boredom

“Before I started Crossfit, I used to run a lot. But in some way the running started to become boring. When I was young, I was a gymnast. When I heard about Crossfit, and the fact that is actually a combination of metabolical conditioning gymnastics and weightlifting, I knew it was something I should try. However, I am a stubborn guy. I don’t like to follow ‘the hype’. Eventually I started doing Crossfit here at Crossfit Wildhearts, this was about two years ago. After getting into it I found out I enjoyed it so much I now feel I should have started way earlier.“

Starting from scratch

Actually I am one of the morning crew members here at Crossfit Wildhearts.

The 6 am WODs are my thing. I am a cabinet maker, specialized in custom made furniture. As a cabinet maker and entrepreneur I like to start from scratch, customizing raw materials into working objects. In November I will start with a new big adventure, my own Bed&Breakfast in Mallnitz, (Kärnten) Austria. Pension Edlinger/ Biergarten in Mallnitz, will be our new home. My wife and two kids will be joining me in this adventure. I won't leave my craftsmanship, the B&B will need an update to the year 2018. Allthough the Austrian "Gemütlichkeit" is something I really love, so not a lot needs to be done. I hope to open my own private crossfitbox in the garage, so when my Wildheart 'family' comes and visit me, they can still work out!

The old gymnast in me

My favorite movement is the handstand walk. Why? Because it is a skilled movement not everyone can do and I’ve managed to master it. For the same reason I don’t like the snatch… It’s a tough one. But when you ask me ‘Is there any workout you don’t ever want to repeat?’: no there isn’t. There is always room for progression. And that feeling that you think you are going to die..That’s what it is all about right.

There is always room for progression, that’s what it’s all about!”

My final Wildheart moment

“I’m afraid I am going to miss Crossfit Wildhearts very much when I’m in Austria. Luckily I will have the chance to compete one more time during the Club Games. I qualified RX this year and I’m very excited to rock the games with my team. The qualifiers and Games are my favorite moments here at the gym. That feeling of excitement when everyone is cheering each other on. Yes… I am definitely going to miss that.”

Stay tuned for our next Wildhearts of the Month!
